"I'm Going to College"
Sunday February 21st
UCLA's "I'm Going to College program", the nation's largest collegiate community outreach effort, has touched the lives of thousands of elementary, middle, and high school students across Southern California. Offered through Southern California school systems, this unique program couples the excitement and tradition of UCLA Athletic events with a message about the importance of higher education.
Upon arrival at the event (3 hours before the event), students are greeted by a UCLA Alumnus, current student, or student-athlete volunteer, and are then led to the IGTC fair area. Students are immediately immersed in Bruin traditions, as they learn the spirited UCLA Eight Clap and the importance of higher education. While at the college fair, students speak with academic counselors and pick up educational information about questions they may have regarding education and preparing for college. Students also have the opportunity to get autographs from student-athletes and speak with current UCLA students who assist with the college fair. Other fun fair activities include carnival games, activity books, a DJ, community outreach booths, give-aways, and removable tattoos where students and even some of their teachers can get into the UCLA spirit before heading into the stadium. During the winter and spring IGTC events that take place on campus, students and teachers are taken on a campus tour that features Pauley Pavilion, Royce Hall, Powell Library, Ackerman Union, the Bruin Bear, and Kerkoff Hall.
Sunday, Feb 21st Gymnastics vs Oregon State College Fair begins at 11AM Volunteer Report time: 10AM
What will you be doing: Meeting the classrooms as they arrive by bus, taking them on a short tour of campus (maps and scripts will be provided) and then escorting them to the college fair in front of Pauley Pavilion.
What do you get: You will receive a Yellow UCLA IGTC shirt (or, wear yours if you helped us out during the football season this year), food and a ticket to the event.
How do you register: Please email Chris Malme with your full name, your cell number and email address and I will respond to you letting you know that you are in.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks everyone!

Select the next generation of UCLA Leaders!
In 1936, UCLA alumni began the tradition of raising and awarding scholarships to help deserving students. Since then, more than 6,000 Bruins have received Alumni Scholarships. Today, generous donors continue to provide crucial support, while committed volunteersdedicate their time to review applications. The program helps make world-class educations attainable and assists UCLA in recruiting the finest students to maintain its status as a world-class institution.
Upon receiving a merit-based Alumni Scholarship, students are eligible to receive additional need-based funding. Scholarship recipients enjoy the camaraderie of the Alumni Scholars Club, as well as networking opportunities with UCLA alumni. Alumni Scholars also develop a sense of giving back to the University and the community through structured service projects. Upon graduation, Alumni Scholars are encouraged to help sustain Alumni Scholarships’ tradition of philanthropy and academic excellence.
March/April
Freshman and Dr. Ralph J. Bunche Freshmen Alumni Scholarship and Competitions
Ninety committees of five to 10 volunteers each meet throughout California to select high school seniors who have demonstrated strong leadership skills. Dr. Ralph J. Bunche Committee volunteers select scholars from historically underrepresented backgrounds; the two meetings to screen applications and interview students typically require eight to 12 hours. Committee chairs contact local volunteers for committee service and conduct local screening and interview meetings. Chairs also help select top students in their areas and serve as judges at the annual State Finals competition in April. Some travel is required; time commitment varies.
Fifteen committees of five to 10 volunteers each meet throughout California to select the most accomplished transfer students from California community colleges. Program volunteers typically attend two meetings, the first to screen applications and the second to participate in interviews. The time commitment is approximately eight to 12 hours. Committee chairs contact local volunteers for committee service and conduct local screening and interview meetings.
Regional clubs who have raised funds for student scholarships (at least $1,000 annually) help recruit incoming freshmen to UCLA who are not California residents. Contact your local regional support group to participate.
Small groups of alumni volunteers meet at the James West Alumni Center on one of two evenings to read applications from continuing Alumni Scholars with financial need for these awards; the time commitment is three to five hours.
Alumni conduct personal interviews with continuing Alumni Scholars to renew their scholarship awards. This opportunity is available only to volunteers who have previous scholarship committee experience. The interviews are held the first weekend in June; the time commitment is approximately three hours.
Do you regularly participate in a volunteer activity? Do you have an idea for which you need volunteers? The San Fernando Valley Bruins want to hear from you! We are actively looking for opportunities where San Fernando Valley Bruins can roll up their sleeves to help out our community. Entities which are either directly or indirectly connected to UCLA are at the top of our list. Please contact Fay Bevans at
