Select the next generation of UCLA Leaders!
In 1936, UCLA alumni began the tradition of raising and awarding scholarships to help deserving students. Since then, more than 6,000 Bruins have received Alumni Scholarships. Today, generous donors continue to provide crucial support, while committed volunteers dedicate their time to review applications. The program helps make world-class educations attainable and assists UCLA in recruiting the finest students to maintain its status as a world-class institution.
Upon receiving a merit-based Alumni Scholarship, students are eligible to receive additional need-based funding. Scholarship recipients enjoy the camaraderie of the Alumni Scholars Club, as well as networking opportunities with UCLA alumni. Alumni Scholars also develop a sense of giving back to the University and the community through structured service projects. Upon graduation, Alumni Scholars are encouraged to help sustain Alumni Scholarships’ tradition of philanthropy and academic excellence.
March/April
Freshman and Dr. Ralph J. Bunche Freshmen Alumni Scholarship and Competitions
Ninety committees of five to 10 volunteers each meet throughout California to select high school seniors who have demonstrated strong leadership skills. Dr. Ralph J. Bunche Committee volunteers select scholars from historically underrepresented backgrounds; the two meetings to screen applications and interview students typically require eight to 12 hours. Committee chairs contact local volunteers for committee service and conduct local screening and interview meetings. Chairs also help select top students in their areas and serve as judges at the annual State Finals competition in April. Some travel is required; time commitment varies.
May/June
Fifteen committees of five to 10 volunteers each meet throughout California to select the most accomplished transfer students from California community colleges. Program volunteers typically attend two meetings, the first to screen applications and the second to participate in interviews. The time commitment is approximately eight to 12 hours. Committee chairs contact local volunteers for committee service and conduct local screening and interview meetings.
May/June
Regional clubs who have raised funds for student scholarships (at least $1,000 annually) help recruit incoming freshmen to UCLA who are not California residents. Contact your local regional support group to participate.
Small groups of alumni volunteers meet at the James West Alumni Center on one of two evenings to read applications from continuing Alumni Scholars with financial need for these awards; the time commitment is three to five hours.
Alumni conduct personal interviews with continuing Alumni Scholars to renew their scholarship awards. This opportunity is available only to volunteers who have previous scholarship committee experience. The interviews are held the first weekend in June; the time commitment is approximately three hours.

Dance Marathon
February 13-14
Students at UCLA have rallied together to put on a 26-hour annual dance-a-thon to acknowledge the battle of children suffering from AIDS by fighting their own personal battle: staying on their feet for the entire duration of the event!
With thousands of participants every year, live music, and appearances by celebrities and activists alike, Dance Marathon has been able to raise over 1.75 million dollars in its eight year history, benefiting HIV-positive children around the world.
Our proceeds benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation – the largest pediatric AIDS foundation in the United States – and Project Kindle and One Heartland, two free summer camp programs that provide HIV-affected children with the experience of a lifetime.
In 2009 alone, Dance Marathon united over 2,500 supporters and grossed $384,000 in financial contributions. Moreover, since its inception in 2002, DM has sought to empower the UCLA campus community in the fight against pediatric AIDS, raising awareness about the importance of HIV education and testing and helping young people make a difference in halting the spread of this critical, preventable disease.
Now in its ninth consecutive year, DM has established itself as a tradition on the UCLA campus and among the Los Angeles community. Still a young organization, DM is constantly looking for new, innovative ways to unite students, community activists, celebrities and leaders around the cause of pediatric AIDS through the same dedication and enthusiasm it has exhibited for the past eight years.
This year, on February 13th-14th, 2010, Dance Marathon at UCLA looks forward to another monumental weekend of campus unity, performance, entertainment, energy, education, and an increasing and ongoing commitment to the cause.
We invite you to learn more about our organization and how you can get involved by checking out the rest of our website www.bruindancemarathon.org
